It Never Rains in (Southern) California… Only Once in a Dodger Blue Moon

Here in Los Angeles we had a much-needed rain today. Los Angeles averages 15″ per year of rain. As of March, we had had only 2.42″.

“The last time it was this dry was in 1923-1924 season when 2.50 inches of rain was recorded through March 22, 1924.” — Eric Boldt said from the National Weather Service regional office in Oxnard

What does this have to do with sports?

The Dodgers have a home game tonight against ex-Dodger manager Jim Tracy’s Pittsburgh Pirates. Tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of the first rained out home game in Dodger Stadium. The second rainout was on April 12, 1976. There seem to have been a few between then and April of 1988 followed by a drought that lasted until April 12, 1999.

Since then, Dodger home fans safely leave the stadium in the 7th inning without needing an umbrella to get to their cars in the parking lot. Still trying to find out if there has ever been a non-April rainout.

Dodger home rainouts are less common than Rosie O’Donnell speeches at National Rifle Association fundraising banquets.

  1. Never saw a rained out game, but I did once have someone spill a drink from the dodger pepsi fan club seats up in the sky. Felt like sweet rain as it misted over us.

  2. Well, even though rain outs almost never happens, sometimes the smog is so thick that it can look like it is about to rain any second.
